Austen and Lawrence. Sex or destiny?

While reading "The Fox" by D.H. Lawrence, I remembered some things related to what I saw last semester in relation to the Victorian age ans specifically to this wonderful book by Jane Austen "Pride and Prejudice". In this case, I would like to make reference to the place in which things happened in both novels. In the case of Pride and Prejudice, everything was sorted out inside the house because that was the place in which things were meant to be solved and where people would be able to be themselves; women were very conservative, shy and quiet outside the house, but at home they showed their true identity, specifically in their bedrooms with their husbands having sex. In relation to that, I would like to add that it was not so different from the point of view presented by Lawrence through his novel. Sex is everything and men and women are meant to be together because it is our human nature. In the case of the place in which things happened in this novel, appart from the importance of the house as a place in which important things took place, the outside was also very important because it was the place in which the most important event occured; Banford´s death; and developed the final relationship between March and Henry, but even though it was the perfect match ( because they were men and women impulsed by their sexual desires), they were not able to be entirelly happy because they didn´t have nothing in common, it was just a sexual atraction. On the contrary, a relationship that was destined to be together; appart from the fact that they were biologically compatible, it was because they were able to talk to each other and have an actual conversation; was Mr. Darcy and Ms Elizabeth Benet.
Finally, I would like to ask you something, what would you prefer to find in a person, a wonderful sexual relationship or the perfect person to talk to?. Make your own analysis and find the answer, but take into account that perfection can only be found in our dreams and not in a real person, or maybe what we want is not actually what we need. Have a great week. :D
PS: I totally recommend you to watch this tv series called "Los in Austen". It completely represents our ideals fighting against the real world., In addition to that, it would be great if you could watch this movie called "Austenland" in which also you can find this misperception of what we want and need.

  1. Your entry is really interesting, and I found really intriguing how you compared both novels which, I believe, are completely different from each other.

I consider that "Pride and Prejudice" has elements which D. H. Lawrence wanted to oppose, such as the elements of love, beauty and what is beautiful. We have to remember how these artists opposed to the concept of beauty according to the elite standards. In that way, I would say that Lawrence was not focused in love or happiness, but only in sexual interaction, and "The Fox" is quite a good example of that.

On the other hand, I agree with you by saying that everything happens in an exact place. The farm could represent a lot of similarities with the house where the events of "Pride and Prejudice" take place. I interpret them as a part of our fictional reality where we are used to live.

Finally, and answering your question, I would say that I'm kind of confused, because, from what I understand, a sexual relationship covers all ways of interaction between human beings (including sex itself). So, I don't if the question refers to sexual interactions or sexual intercourse only.
